My father, Wlliam Twohy, did not share much of his experiences with VMB 613, but I remember he always expressed regret that the crews wanted to fly their planes back to the states but, instead, were obliged to watch them flown off the end of the runway (or a carrier) with the controls lashed down and unceremoniously dumped into the lagoon. To see those underwater photographs of the planes was really remarkable. I'm sure my dad would have been moved - though I don't know if he would have shown it.

Thank you so much for the wealth of information you provide on this site. My grandfather, Edmund Zitkus, was a photographer for the 613, and it's wonderful to finally put faces to the names and places that I've heard much about. I think it's very important for younger generations to learn about the experiences and sacrifices of the servicemen who fought during such a fascinating and turbulent time in history. Your website definitely helps complete the stories I vaguely remember hearing about as a child. Thanks again.

My dad was member of the 613. I was thinking about him after watching Flags of our Fathers and felt compelled to search out the 613. I grew up in a Marine home and was fortunate enough to not have to serve. I am passing the Marine values my father taught me on to my two boys and never allowing the sacrifice of all Marines to be forgotten. May God contiune to bless this, the greatest country on earth.

You guys have no idea how excited I am. My father was Staff Sergeant William S. Semple. He talked a little bit about his time in the Marines, but I had no idea there was a website devoted to his squadron. Just a little background on myself, I'm a 27 year old airframe and powerplant mechanic, and I currently work in Milwaukee Wisconsin for Midwest Airlines. I can't tell you enough how honored I am to find this website, and how cool it is to learn about my father, and of your special squadron. What a great website!!! My Father, Dino J. Chaparas, was a member of this squadron. I never really spoke with him about his experiences in WWII before he passed at the early age of 44. It was a very strange coincidence that I even found this site, but am grateful for all of the wonderful information it contains. I finally am begining to get a grasp on my father's contributions while serving in the USMC.
