CELEBRITIES VISIT THE OFFICERS CLUB: During her visit to Kwajalein, Chili Williams, "The Polka Dot Girl," and Broadway actress, Mary Ann McCarthy drop in for a visit at VMB-613's Officers Club. TYRONE POWER: Besides being a famous Hollywood Actor before the Second World War, Tyrone E. Power, Jr. also served in the Marine Corps as a pilot. While overseas, First Lieutenant Power flew R5Cs, and was assigned to VMR-353 where he transported wounded servicemen from Iwo Jima and Okinawa to Hawaii—a flight always requiring a fuel stop on Kwajalein. On at least one occasion, Lieutenant Power dropped by VMB-613's compound to say "hello" to his friend from Officer Candidate School, VMB-613 Adjutant, First Lieutenant Arthur H. Navarre. ARCHBISHOP FRANCIS SPELLMAN: Archbishop Spellman, Apostolic Vicar of the U.S. Armed Forces, visited Kwajalein in 1945. TAIYO MARU: Derelict off Eller Island in Kwajalein Lagoon, the Taiyo Maru was beached there by Japanese troops attempting to escape following the invasion of Kwajalein in February, 1944. JAPANESE TRAWLER: This unidentified Japanese trawler was beached in the vicinity of the Taiyo Maru, off Eller Island. Although much smaller, about 340 gross registered tons, she met her fate attempting to escape during the invasion of Kwajalein. The name of this vessel was never learned and remains a mystery today.
