One PBJ-1H of this squadron
took off a 1520 for a reconnaissance flight over Kusaie Island. On
arrival over Kusiae at 1730 the cloud coverage was 1/10 to 2/10 with
built up cumulus clouds over the center of the island with a base of
3000' built up to 4500'. The pilot circled the island at an
altitude of from 1500' to 3000'. At approximately 1830 while at an
altitude of 1200' one burst from a medium anti-aircraft gun was noticed.
The gun position was believed to be on the small tip of land on the
eastern shore of Kusaie Island on the south side of Lele Harbor.
Future attempts to draw fire from this position were negative.
