One PBJ of this squadron
took off at 2250 M. 23 March for a special night reconnaissance of Mille
Atoll. In addition to the depth charges the plane was loaded with
two Mark Six (6) flares. The plane proceeded to the target and
found the area to be covered by intermittent rain squalls and the
visibility very poor. The pilot dropped his flares over Mille
Island and over the lagoon near the island but no activity was observed.
At 0100 a target was picked up on the search radar which appeared to be
about five (5) miles from Mille Island on a course of 210°.
The pilot immediately began to run down this target. Due to the
storm-impaired reception he overran the target once, but turning 180°
the target was picked up again and the run continued. However,
between four (4) and five (5) miles away the target was lost in a rain
squall and in spite of persistent search, was not found again. At
0205 the pilot left the area and proceeded to Majuro for regassing and
additional flares. Retuning to the target at 0400 the patrol was
resumed. At 0430 a target was again seen in the radar scope, this
time about ten (10) to eleven (11) miles from Mille and on the same
bearing of 210°.
Again the pilot began to run down the target and again the blip
alternately appeared and disappeared until it was finally lost at about
a five (5) mile range. Again a diligent search was made but the
target was not regained. During the course of the patrol run
around the Atoll, meagre, inaccurate small arms fire was directed at the
plane from Lukinor Island. At 0700 the plane left the target and
landed at Majuro at 0725 for gas returning to Kwajalein later in the
day.
