One plane of this
squadron took off at 0630 for a reconnaissance mission on Ponape Island.
Rain squalls were encountered over the island. When a run was
being made on an outrigger the weather was clear. A strafing run
was made on an outrigger located one and one-half miles due north of the
northern tip of Param Island. 300 rounds of .50 cal. ammunition
was expended with 25% hits, which were sufficient to sink the outrigger.
The run was made on a heading of
90°.
